ROMANIA
The
1989/90 revolution removed the Ceausescu dynasty, but not the
Marxist attitudes. There remains a heaviness here because the
economic and political freedoms they thought would be theirs have
not happened.
Millions have grown up
with no exposure to the Gospel. Some leaders in the Orthodox
church (state church) oppose Protestants and foreign evangelistic
outreach. One Orthodox leader called Evangelicals “the biggest
heresy in Europe.”
The transition from persecution to
worship and witness has been difficult. There is a great need for
biblical teaching. Few pastors have had formal training.
Most can not afford
the tuition and fees for this kind of education.
In the last ten years,
five new churches have been opened every Sunday and over 100,000
people have turned to God and have become active in local
churches.
There are more
evangelical Christians in Romania than in any other Eastern
European country, but there are still 7 million Romanians who live
in 9,600 villages that are without even one evangelical church.
There is a need for thousands of new-church plants.
The Romanian people are
warm, loving, and VERY RECEPTIVE to the Gospel. NOW is the time
to work while doors and hearts are open.
